Day 20: Seville

Tuesday, 8th April 2008

19ºC
14ºC

We awoke to the sound of rain hitting the roofs. It didn’t seem like the rain would let up. We were in Seville for the April Fair, and the heavens were raining down, heavy as can be.

We had a hearty breakfast, courtesy of the wonderful hostel. Then we waited for the rain to stop.

And then we waited.

And then we contemplated going out in the rain. But it was too heavy.

And then we waited.

Should we just walk in the rain? No! It’s too heavy, even with an umbrella!

And then we waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And it was afternoon.

Siesta time!

Oh! Screw the rain! Eh, squek la! Its only drizzling now, so let’s go for a walk!

Today, we ended up not doing much. We walked to the city center of Seville, where we took a look at the Seville Cathedral. It is the largest medieval gothic religious building in the world, by area and volume, measuring 76 by 115 metres. It was built on where the old mosque used to stand after the Reconquista when the Christians drove the Muslims out of Spain.

Us in the rain in front of the cathedral.

It was then we realized that we were in our fifth day in Spain, and we had yet to savour Spanish tapas! We walked up and down Gago street, known as the tapas street of Seville, looking for a good tapas store, in the rain! We eventually settled in a small shop, crowded enough to convince us it was good. Thankfully, the waiter here spoke English, and was friendly enough to make us feel comfortable in an authentic Spanish setting. We ordered our choices, and what a treat it was!

Fried Squid Rings
Ham and Mint Coquettes
Ham and Cheese Rolls
Pork Loin in Garlic Sauce
Mushrooms in Garlic Sauce
Oxtail Stew
Spanish Sausage
Lamb Couscous
Grilled Halibut

With our stomachs filled, we headed back to the hostel. Here, we called a cab, and headed to the airport, a 15 minute ride away. The airport was surprisingly small for such a major city like Seville. But anyhow, we checked ourselves in, and bought ourselves some snacks before our Ryanair flight into London.

Couple of hours later, we were in London!

A long long bus ride into the heart of London, followed by a walk and another bus ride, we arrived at Chun Yang's hostel at 3am.

Exhausted.
